Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Powder Supplements Sold at Sam’s Club

So far, 11 people have reported getting sick from Salmonella infections. These infections are associated with powdered dietary supplements distributed at Sam’s Club retail outlets around the country and online. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has opened an investigation into the outbreak. So far, this alarming state of affairs has resulted in at least three hospitalizations.

The confirmed cases of Salmonella infections span seven states: Florida, Kansas, Michigan, North Carolina, New York, South Carolina, and Virginia. According to health officials, the illnesses happened between May and September of this year. Most individuals infected with Salmonella can expect to recover in a week’s time. The recent lawsuits have raised new questions over whether these dietary products are safe.

In reaction to the salmonella outbreak, Sam’s Club has begun a voluntary recall of the powder supplements in question. The products under scrutiny contain Moringa, an herb with origins in India and other parts of Asia. Its full nutritional profile is packed with protein, amino acids, vitamins and minerals. The National Institutes of Health has even given Moringa an award for its health-boosting properties! When found in dietary supplements, its presence is alarming—especially when associated with outbreaks of foodborne illness.

Virginia’s state health officials and Michigan’s are rolling up their sleeves to do something about it. They’ve been gathering and testing product samples from the homes of affected residents. How these tests will be used The results from these tests will feed into the larger investigation still being carried out by federal health officials.

If you purchased dietary supplements from Sam’s Club, don’t wait—act today! Find out if those products have been recalled and dispose of them to avoid serious health impacts. The CDC is actively monitoring this situation and will update you as more information develops.
