Sydney Sweeney, the 28-year-old actress known for her dynamic roles in film and television, is on track for an exhilarating October release. Her latest film “Christy” opens in theaters nationwide Friday, Nov. 6. In her portrayal of Christy Martin, a trailblazer for women in boxing, Sweeney underwent a significant physical transformation, gaining 35 pounds to authentically embody the character.
To prepare for this demanding role, Sweeney adopted an intense training regimen that included weight training every morning and boxing for two to three hours each day. She borrowed the shed on her grandma’s property in Pocatello, Idaho, and turned it into a temporary gym.
“It was so much fun though, because I grew up in Idaho with my family, and my grandma’s my neighbor, and I turned her shed into my ‘Rocky’ gym,” Sweeney explained.
Along with her intense training regimen, Sweeney’s meals were mainly protein shakes to help with her muscle growth. She expressed her passion for the project, stating, “I don’t care, I want to produce this, I just want to be a part of telling her story and hopefully opening doors for other people. It is unbelievable.”
Sweeney’s commitment to the role went deeper than just training his body. Getting to work with Christy Martin on the set, she got to learn from someone who had walked a similar path. She described it as “a dream come true.”
It was such a blast to have her under there, particularly when it came to the fighting scenes. Her voice blasting through the speakers as she’s literally at the bottom of the ring yelling, ‘Knock her out with a left hook! Such as, ‘You know what I’m gonna do, Christy, Sweeney recalled with excitement.
The actress threw a magical “Shrek”-themed Friendsgiving bash. Today, she’s thrumming with enthusiasm planning a Key West wedding where guests will need to come in costume as characters from the “Shrek” version of fairy tales.
More than a fighter [She] was a professional boxer who rose to prominence during an era where women’s boxing was widely unsupported. She was a pioneer for women boxers,” Sweeney said about Martin, underscoring the importance of the character she represents.
On Tuesday, November 4, in Sweeney’s case, she was featured on “Good Morning America.” She was all smiles as she discussed the film and opened up about her connection to the project. “The only thing I can say is it’s about God,” she mentioned, indicating deeper themes within the narrative.
As Sweeney prepares for the film’s premiere, she remains focused on bringing Christy Martin’s inspiring story to life on screen.
