Who is Rama Duwaji, the Artist and Wife of New York City’s Mayor-Elect?

Rama Duwaji, wife of New York City’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, is garnering attention as she embarks on her new role as First Lady. Duwaji, whose family has roots in Syria and Texas, was born to activism. Her adventurous story has taken her from the US to Dubai, Lebanon, France, and now to colorful New York City. As an artist, activist and educator who continuously pours her passions into her community work, Adebunmi showcases her life and art through experience and self-reflection.

Duwaji’s artistic practice embodies the sincerity she brings to crafting impactful art. She relocated with her family to Dubai when she was nine years old. There, her craft deepened as she became part of residency programs in Lebanon and France. In 2021, Duwaji relocated to New York City. She received her Master of Fine Arts from School of Visual Arts in 2024. No wonder her work strikes just the right chord with audiences that are aligned to her vision and passions.

Artistic Journey and Community Engagement

Rama Duwaji’s art is inextricably tied to her life story. This focus on community resonates deeply with her creative process.

“These days, I focus on making art about my experiences and the things I care about, and the community that forms from conversations about my work — both online and in person — happens organically,” – Rama Duwaji.

>Her work combining social issues and art forms has made her a powerful force in New York’s cultural ecosystem. She hopes to excite and inspire those people who will click below her intention and vision.

“I make my work for people who care about the things I care about,” – Rama Duwaji.

A Personal Connection

Duwaji and Mamdani originally matched on the dating app Hinge. Their bond has ignited dialogue but since their recent marriage, has lit fires of conversation. These two sweethearts married at the City Clerk’s office, only three months before their annual Instagram post in May 2025. Their love story has been an inspiration to millions.

“I met my wife on Hinge, so there is still hope in those dating apps,” – Zohran Mamdani.

Mamdani is obviously a big fan of Duwaji. He doesn’t shy away from expressing human emotions about her central role in his life and their path forward.

“There is no one I would rather have by my side in this moment and in every moment,” – Zohran Mamdani.

Facing Challenges

As the couple navigates the political landscape, Duwaji has faced scrutiny from right-wing critics attempting to shift the focus of the mayoral race onto her. Mamdani has condemned these tactics and made public the efforts to define his wife beyond her individuality and talent.

“Now, right-wing trolls are trying to make this race — which should be about you — about her,” – Zohran Mamdani.

He goes on to argue that Duwaji’s artistic identity should be celebrated without reference to his political career.

“Rama isn’t just my wife, she’s an incredible artist who deserves to be known on her own terms. You can critique my views, but not my family,” – Zohran Mamdani.
