Tesla’s Roadster Reveal Delayed Until April Fools’ Day

Elon Musk announced a delay in the production reveal of Tesla’s highly anticipated second-generation Roadster, now set for April Fools’ Day next year. Releasing this decision—first revealed during a recent panel discussing the proceedings—gives Musk “some deniability” on the announcement’s timing. The electric semi truck has been eagerly awaited for years, with Musk promising it would be a game-changer since 2017.

Friday’s announcement coincides with Musk’s goal of having a demo model of the new Roadster on display by the end of this year. He described this demo as potentially “the most exciting, whether it works or not, demo ever of any product.” On the downside, he admitted that mass-production won’t start until 12-18 months after the projected April reveal date.

Musk’s toxic, cavalier relationship with customers was made even more apparent in a recent Twitter spat with Open AI CEO Sam Altman. Altman unsuccessfully tried to get a $50,000 reservation for a Tesla Roadster refunded when he decided to cancel. After Altman made his concern public, Musk personally extended a refund to him within the next 24 hours.

“I really was excited for the car!” – Sam Altman

Aside from fighting off refund requests Musk doubled down on improving the Roadster. He stated that the upcoming model will be “very different from what was shown previously,” hinting at the potential inclusion of SpaceX-built thrusters that he has been developing for years.

Anticipation for the new Roadster has further built since its unveiling. That reveal was seven and a half years ago! Some customers, particularly those who preordered the exclusive “Founders Series” version, paid $250,000 to secure their vehicles back in 2017.

Musk took the opportunity to poke fun at biohacking gent and long-time sparring partner Altman during their Twitter tête-à-tête, leaning into their rivalry. “And you forgot to mention act 4, where this issue was fixed and you received a refund within 24 hours,” Musk remarked. He added, “It’s the least we can do for our long-suffering Roadster reservation holders.”

Musk’s many, many guest spots on Joe Rogan’s podcast have renewed interest in the Roadster project. He insisted that his pledge to reveal the car at the end of the year was on track. With the final reveal date drawing closer, Tesla aficionados and reservation holders alike are eager to hear more about this innovative new vehicle.
