Queensland Health have announced a nationwide recall of a number of alfalfa sprouts. This move follows a nation-wide outbreak of salmonella, which has sickened at least 44 people across Australia. Late on Friday night, at about 11 PM, officials from the U.S. Federal health experts are regularly tracking the situation to better understand the long-term effects of this contaminated product.
As of Saturday, November 8, 2025, at 6:55 AM, Queensland Health confirmed that cases have emerged in multiple states, prompting urgent action to protect public health. The recall includes a number of different alfalfa sprout products. Regulators are advising consumers to inspect their homes for any contaminated products.
Health Advisory Issued
Given the current outbreak, Queensland Health has shared some important information about what symptoms you may experience after being exposed to salmonella. Symptoms typically begin within six to 72 hours of exposure to the bacteria. They are sometimes referred to as “period-like” migraines and can persist from four to seven days.
“Symptoms usually start six to 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria and usually last for four to seven days,” – Queensland Health.
Officials warn symptoms can last weeks, sometimes longer.
“However, symptoms can sometimes last a lot longer,” – Queensland Health.
Health officials advise that if you have severe symptoms, like diarrhea or vomit lasting 3 days, you should go to the hospital.
Consumer Guidance
Queensland Health have strongly advised consumers to avoid eating any alfalfa sprouts which may be contaminated. They encouraged everyone to take these products back to where they bought them and receive a total refund.
“Consumers should not eat this product. Consumers should return the product(s) to the place of purchase for a full refund. Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice,” – Food Standards Australia website.
Catherine McDougall, Queensland’s Chief Health Officer, stressed the need for individuals displaying symptoms to consult a doctor if their condition worsens or does not improve.
“If you have symptoms of diarrhoea or vomiting that don’t settle, are very unwell or concerned, please see your doctor,” – Catherine McDougall.
Government Response
The Queensland government is doing all that it can to prevent the outbreak from doing even greater damage. Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls said the rapid response to the crisis was Heart failure on the move Tim Nicholls, Queensland Health Minister.
“[The recall] was issued around 11 PM Friday. Hopefully most of those products have now been removed,” – Tim Nicholls.
