Torbay Council Expands Affordable Housing Initiative with Seabury Hotel Conversion

This is a bold step by Torbay Council to address the housing crisis within the area. They are about to take on the Seabury Hotel in Torquay. We congratulate the council on its second acquisition of a site to increase the stock of affordable homes. This new initiative specifically targets the communities of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. Construction at the site of the future Seabury Hotel will begin in mid-2026. This project will introduce attainable residential units that better align with the needs of the growing local community.

The need for truly affordable housing in Torbay is urgent, with about 1600 people now on the Torbay housing waiting list. We’re proud that Torbay Council’s initiatives are among those actively working to lower this number. Just like their larger counterparts, they’re making residents’ quality of life a prime goal. Alan Tyerman, the council’s cabinet member for housing innovation, said he was delighted and excited by the development. He added that the new homes would provide a “great Christmas gift” to future residents.

Tyerman highlighted that the transformation of the Seabury Hotel into residential flats represents “a significant milestone as Torbay Council delivers on its ambition to provide more affordable homes in Torbay.” His comments are a strong indication of the strong commitment from the council to solve the housing crisis. Simultaneously, they highlight the need to protect and expand green spaces.

Tyerman further stated, “What has been achieved is excellent and proves that we can deliver the homes we need and protect our precious green spaces.” His comments underscore the importance of assessing this development in terms of its impact on our environment. That continues to be a very high priority for the council.

By acquiring sites like the Seabury Hotel, Torbay Council aims to create sustainable living spaces while addressing the growing demand for housing. As part of this effort, the initiative seeks to empower residents with information to make more affordable home access decisions. It stands to be a critical key for their prosperous community to flourish.
