Our very own Sam Darcy has recently been in the news! Later in June he was chosen to represent Victoria as full forward in the next State of Origin football series. This honor not only marks a personal achievement for the young athlete but positions him uniquely within a family legacy that spans generations within the sport.
Sam, son of former South Australian player Luke Darcy, is tearing up the competition in the AFL. His generational talent and the history of his family have people buzzing. His grandfather, David Darcy, represented Victoria on four occasions, creating an impressive footballing lineage. Raised in Western Australia, Sam has deep-rooted connections to the area, with family support going back home.
The AFL saw something different in Sam’s atypical background. Due to his upbringing here and family connections in WA, they opened the door for him to play for the Black Swan. This recent decision reflects the league’s understanding of the significance of local heritage in portraying state teams.
This week it was announced that Sam has been selected to play for Victoria! This would make him the first third-generation State of Origin player since Collingwood legend Lou Richards. He joins an elite group after legendary rivals Charlie Pannam and son Alby Pannam. This historical marker celebrates his family’s legacy. It further emphasizes the increasing phenomenon of multi-generational players in Australian rules football.
Dean Cox, coach of the Western Australia team, has high hopes for this squad. He points to their jaw-dropping athleticism and gold medalists’ wisdom.
“I’m really happy with how the squad is shaping up, with 14 of the state’s best homegrown footballers locked in and ready to represent Western Australia.” – Dean Cox
He went on to explain the quality of the players that were chosen for the team.
“They’re all players who know how to stand up in big moments, and half of them are premiership players which will be invaluable experience on the Origin stage.” – Dean Cox
