Google Prepares to Launch AI Summaries for News Articles

Now, Google plans to take the same approach to making news articles easier to read with AI-generated summaries available on Search, News and Google’s mobile Discover feed. This new generative AI feature provides users with clear and informative summaries of news articles. It helps them to understand right away all the information that they need to know. The company plans to roll out the ability to users who speak English around the world in the coming weeks. Their goal is to add it for all supported languages by early next year.

The coming AI summaries will do more than just shorten a story. Advocates promise they’ll include attribution too. And users will have convenient access to the full original articles via direct links included right inside the summaries themselves. This initiative builds on Google’s previous introduction of AI summaries in its Discover feature, which serves as the main news feed within Google’s search app. In July, Google introduced AI-generated summaries. This rollout emphasizes their dedication to the use of artificial intelligence for making news more accessible.

To put this strategy in action, Google has also launched a year-long pilot program with over a dozen leading news publishers. Participating organizations include Der Spiegel, El País, and Folha. Additional fellows include Infobae, Kompas, The Guardian, The Times of India, The Washington Examiner and The Washington Post. These collaborations are yet another indication of Google’s approach to consult with stakeholders across the news ecosystem in order to improve and develop product offerings.

Google’s move comes as part of its broader initiative to adapt to the evolving ways in which people consume information. The company claims to be dedicated to continually improving its products based on user feedback and industry requirements.

“As the way people consume information evolves, we’ll continue to improve our products for people around the world and engage with feedback from stakeholders across the ecosystem.” – [“Google”]

The new feature will give users a more efficient way to discover and engage with news content. Google wants to increase user engagement and satisfaction by providing AI-generated summaries. All the while, they continue to walk a line in trying to keep news publishers happy.

Our release party for this feature will be at Civic Makers Launch event from October 13-15, 2026 in San Francisco. Google representatives will provide more background on this exciting new initiative during the event. In doing so, they should clarify how these AI tools will operate and help delineate the benefits to users and publishers alike.
