Corey Durdin, another gifted forward, was selected No. 37 by the Carlton Football Club in the 2020 National AFL draft. Now, he’s taken an equally bold leap forward in his own career. Durdin has pulled the trigger on the audacious move after five seasons with Carlton. Earlier this year, after a three-team trade that involved the Gold Coast Suns, he was acquired by Port Adelaide.
Yet Durdin’s choice to head home to South Australia is a highly personal one. Although he cites many inspirations for his motivation behind this move, he largely credits his younger sister, Shianne Durdin, as a key driving factor. Though born without sight, at 16 years old, Shianne has accomplished some amazing things. Now, she plays for Australia in blind soccer – a sport that showcases her athletic talent and her unbending spirit.
“So essentially what I see is a just little bit of light perception, I can’t see the colour of it, just the shade,” – Shianne Durdin.
Most of all, I have always been inspired by my sister’s tenacity, her achievements serving as positive driving forces in my life. He’s adamant that Shianne has never let her lack of vision dictate who she is, or stop her from pursuing her goals.
“It is inspiring how she goes about it. I wouldn’t say she’s let her vision impairment stop her,” – Corey Durdin.
Durdin’s respect for Shianne goes beyond mommy, as he attributes her fearlessness that the most impactful fearlessness — changed the way he plays football. He said he was looking forward to the opportunity to play under new Port Adelaide coach Josh Carr. With that enthusiasm, he looks to make his unique stamp on the squad.
“Seeing her be able to go after it despite what she has, is very motivating for me to come out here and put my best foot forward,” – Corey Durdin.
Corey Durdin dives into an exhilarating new adventure with Port Adelaide. He brings his extensive skills as an enigmatic forward and the unyielding support of his biggest fan, his sister. Collectively, they represent a hopeful vision for what can be built with creativity and dedication, outweighing the toxicity that often surrounds them.
