Sophie Turner has been officially cast as the new Lara Croft. She’s one of the lead actors in the new, untitled Prime Video series inspired by the iconic “Tomb Raider” video game franchise. The announcement has created quite the buzz all around, especially among the devotees of the series. Incredibly, Turner is probably still best known for her stunningly fierce performances. She’s shared her excitement for this new role, saying she’s “thrilled beyond measure” to get to play such an iconic character.
The first-look photo that Netflix released features a very adventurous-looking Turner wearing a green tank top and black shorts. She finishes off her style with cool red-tinted sunglasses and Croft’s signature gun holsters. Her hair is pulled back, which perfectly exemplifies her intensity and unyielding approach to achieving justice. This impressive representation is Turner’s debut in a role which has been played in the past by celebrated actresses Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander.
Turner’s no doubt excited to be working alongside a very talented cast and crew for the series. Phoebe Waller-Bridge creator, writer, executive producer and co-showrunner with Chad Hodge. Jonathan Van Tulleken will direct and executive produce. Paul Mescal, Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs and more round out a cast loaded with talent. Starring are Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie and August Wittgenstein.
The series follows the breathtaking adventures of world-famous tomb raider Lara Croft. It builds upon the exciting story laid out in earlier adaptations. Angelina Jolie first brought the character to life in 2001’s “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” and its sequel, 2003’s “The Cradle of Life.” Swedish actress Alicia Vikander starred in the 2018 film reboot, named “Tomb Raider.”
Sophie is really pleased with this opportunity and knows how important Lara Croft is in pop culture. She remarked, “She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many — and I am giving everything I’ve got.”
