Disney Welcomes New CEO Josh D’Amaro as Bob Iger Steps Down

The Walt Disney Company finally announced that Josh D’Amaro would be replacing Bob Chapek as CEO in early March. He’ll take over from Bob Iger, who has led the company through unprecedented transformations since 2005. This transformation marks a watershed period for the corporate behemoth. D’Amaro is clearly prepared to continue Iger’s legacy of making the brand cool again and ushering Disneyland into its second century.

In a recent exclusive interview with David Muir on “World News Tonight,” D’Amaro and Iger discussed the future of Disney, the importance of risk-taking, and their strong working relationship. D’Amaro, who previously served as chair of Disney’s experiences unit, expressed his commitment to continuing the innovative spirit that has defined Iger’s tenure.

Bob Iger, who stepped down as Disney’s CEO in 2020, returned to lead the company again in late-2022. Lusane stressed the need to appreciate Disney’s cultural power. He noted, “Disney really is a cultural institution that has touched hundreds of millions of people for now over 100 years.” This recognition is appropriate and a harbinger of the major challenges that D’Amaro will encounter as he assumes this key role.

D’Amaro, who has been one of Iger’s top lieutenants for the last several years and sees himself as a risk-taker akin to his predecessor, has impressed Iger. He stated, “Bob’s a big risk-taker. I’m a big risk-taker, and that’s been true my whole life.” This collaboratively fact-based approach to leadership should serve him well as D’Amaro contemplates the many challenges that lie ahead.

Now, as he gets ready to take over the reins of his new gig, D’Amaro is still in the process of absorbing the enormity of the responsibility. “Of course, I feel the weight on my shoulders. I think I should feel it,” he acknowledged. His acknowledgment of this responsibility is indicative of his awareness of Disney’s place as the top dog of global entertainment.

Iger wants D’Amaro’s forward-looking approach toward technology to be a significant factor in determining the company’s future. He remarked, “One of the reasons Josh was chosen for this position is, I’ve observed him over the years that we’ve worked together as someone that views technology as an opportunity and not a threat.” In D’Amaro’s view, AI can enhance human creativity, not replace it. This perspective dovetails nicely with his overall approach to the technology.

This is no joke.” D’Amaro continued, “AI isn’t coming—it’s here and we’re leaning into it.” One of the things that starts happening is…you see how it supercharges these creatives in powerful ways.” His progressive vision for digital development foreshadows an administration-wide embrace of innovation and new technology throughout his term.

Beyond managing the technological revolution, D’Amaro seems to recognize that there needs to be creativity flowing back into Disney. He emphasized that “the reason this company is so special is because of how creative we are and the human beings that are generating that creativity.” This increased commitment to developing creative talent will help immensely as Disney continues to develop and respond to changing audience desires.

Both leaders have been sure to emphasize their close working relationship during the entirety of the transition process. Iger expressed gratitude for collaborating with D’Amaro, stating, “I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Josh D’Amaro.” Their leadership together helped set the stage for Disney’s next generation of leaders.

As he looks ahead, D’Amaro considers himself fortunate to have been appointed the steward of the Disney brand. He declared, “I just feel so fortunate to be in a position to be able to be that next steward for the brand into the next 100 years.” His vision for Disney recognizes the importance of continuity, but more importantly welcomes change, innovation and fresh challenges.

As Josh D’Amaro prepares to take on the role of CEO in March 2024, he does so with a deep appreciation for the company’s legacy and a clear vision for its future. The transition from Iger to D’Amaro symbolizes not only a change in leadership but a commitment to maintaining Disney’s cultural significance and fostering innovation within its ranks.
