Kroger recently named former Walmart US Chief Greg Foran to be its next Chief Executive Officer. This announcement follows the resignation of Rodney McMullen from the post, which he’d occupied since 2014. Foran, the former CEO of Air New Zealand, will take the helm as Kroger navigates regulatory scrutiny related to its proposed merger with Albertsons. Now the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has teamed up with Washington and Colorado to sue to block the merger. They claim that this merger will increase prices and lower wages for workers by reducing competition in grocery.
Rodney McMullen officially retired from Kroger’s board chair last March. Consequently, Ron Sargent became acting CEO. Under Sargent’s leadership, Kroger has sought to address ongoing challenges while preparing for a future under Foran’s guidance.
“Greg is a highly respected operator who knows how to run large-scale retail businesses, strengthen store execution, and lead high-performing teams,” Sargent said in a statement regarding Foran’s appointment. Judging from his remarks, he clearly believes that Foran’s approach to leadership and commitment to customer service will be key for Kroger in the long-term, too.
Foran, who previously ran Walmart’s U.S. division for six years, brings a deep bench of experience to Kroger. During his time at Walmart, he introduced home delivery and grocery pickup services. This big acquisition was a three-fold move that greatly expanded the company’s digital base as well. He led Air New Zealand through the turbulence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Simultaneously, he shepherded contract negotiations with the airline’s union.
As Kroger continues to encounter legal obstacles to its intended merger, the grocer is continuing to pursue actions that could bolster its competitive hand. The FTC and two states, New York and Illinois, claim that the merger would substantially lessen competition in the grocery market. This would lead to increased consumer prices and reduced worker wages.
“His leadership style, focus on the customer, commitment to associates, and disciplined approach to execution are the perfect fit for Kroger.” – Ron Sargent
