Anthropic, the AI company co-founded by Dario Amodei, has recently established a presence in India. This is no small step, as the far-eastern country is quickly dawning as a crucial battleground for AI companies. This expansion has sparked legal controversy. Anthropic Software, a minority-owned local software company, recently filed suit against Anthropic. They claim that they’ve had priority on the name “Anthropic” since 2017 and that the larger company’s recent launch into the market has created consumer confusion.
In January, that complaint was filed in the commercial court of the Karnataka state. This announcement came just days before Anthropic’s announced activities in the region. Anthropic Software claims that it deserves to be recognized for its prior use of the name “Anthropic.” Anthropic Software is requesting equitable relief to prevent any consumer confusion that would irreparably damage its business endeavors. The company is seeking ₹10 million ($110,000) in damages as well.

“As of now, I am exercising my legal right as it’s causing huge confusion to my customers.” – Mohammadayyaz A. Mulla
On January 20, the court entered a draft order with a notice and summons, sent to Anthropic. This order requires the company to answer the charges. Then don’t miss our next guest, Dario Amodei, as he prepares to present at the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi next week. He’ll be joined by a who’s who of global tech luminaries including Sam Altman, Jensen Huang, and Sundar Pichai at this now-annual marquee event.
The Indian AI summit marks an important opportunity for international AI companies to gain a foothold in India. This area is quickly growing into an important market for the likes of Anthropic and OpenAI. Both companies are engaged in a furious competition for all-encompassing supremacy in AI technology creation and utilization.
Though asked multiple times to comment about the state of their continued litigation with OpenAI, to date Anthropic has not commented to the press. As the case progresses, huge ramifications for both companies become apparent. Brand reputation and consumer confidence may be irrevocably damaged.
