Australia was treated to one of the most stunning celestial events in years, as the Blood Moon emerged over the Australian landscape, enrapturing star-enthusiasts across the country. With the rare total lunar eclipse, stargazers across the globe were entranced. Residents of Port Lincoln, QLD, and Perth, WA, were treated to breathtaking views of the aurora borealis and turned skywatching into an artform.
Kieren Cook braved the cold in his Port Lincoln backyard to capture images of the spectacular Blood Moon. His efforts join a host of others across the country who aimed their cameras at the sky to document the rare event. Mick and his son walking on Sunshine Beach in Queensland. Captivating Images from Across Australia
Photographers from all around Australia flooded the web with their incredible photos of the Blood Moon. Aerial image of Cockburn Cement operation in Success, Western Australia taken by Richard Dunne that shows the moon’s ghostly light. At the top right, WA photographer Raphael Woon shot an amazing scene of a Blood Moon rising behind Perth’s city skyscrapers.
In New South Wales, Elise Hammond and Linda Mcivor captured the story too from their home in Kempsey. Linda aimed her Seestar telescope at the night sky, improving her experience of this incredible spectacle. At the same time, her 97-year-old mother watched the spectacle from her bedroom window in Strathpine, Queensland.
Photographer Dominique Oberhauser captured the stunning red hue of the Blood Moon from Richmond. Sean Coyne participated remotely from Lindisfarne, Tasmania. Patrick Shannon was fortunate enough to take this photo just before clouds obscured his view from Mount Duneed.
Personal Moments Under the Blood Moon
The Blood Moon was both a visual spectacular and a vintage wonder-maker for countless Australians. Adrienne’s birthday fell within this fleeting celestial wonder. Her reflections on the experience made it clear just how meaningful this opportunity was.
“It was wonderful to ponder what lies ahead while witnessing the sheer magnificence of nature,” – Adrienne
She said she wanted to remember this birthday all her life. In an effort to be completely present in the experience, she chose not to photograph any of the images herself.
“I didn’t take any photos as I wanted to take it all in and not get distracted. I will remember this birthday forever, it was magical,” – Adrienne
Tony Belton told how he enjoyed watching the Blood Moon from his deck in Iluka, north of Yamba. He commented that even with clouds covering the moon, they rolled away just in time for him to get beautiful images.
“I just sat on my verandah, and sure enough it came up, and there were clouds around the moon, but they broke away fortunately, and I was able to get some nice shots off,” – Tony Belton
A Unifying Experience
South Australians were equally as keen to get amongst this one-of-a-kind experience from their own backyards. The eclipse was an extraordinary event which gave us all a chance to appreciate nature’s amazing beauty. It fostered the ideal environment for family and friends to reconnect.
Thousands of communities across Australia sent in their stories and photos of the Blood Moon. This extraordinary phenomenon had all of us transfixed and brought all of us together in awe of the universe’s spectacular magic.
