Dick Van Dyke Approaches 100 with Wisdom and Humor

Iconic entertainer Dick Van Dyke is just few weeks shy of his 100th birthday on December 13. He reflects on an extraordinary life filled described by accomplishments, struggle, and an undeniable lust for life. Van Dyke is rightly known for his iconic performances that have enchanted audiences for decades. His new book, 100 Rules for Living to 100, published last November, is still changing lives.

Van Dyke’s illustrious career features unforgettable outings across a wide spectrum. Fans remember him for his magical performance in the 1964 classic motion picture “Mary Poppins,” where he—along with co-star Julie Andrews—filled hearts and minds with the whimsical song “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” His talents earned him a Tony Award for his performance in “Bye Bye Birdie” and an Emmy for his work on “The Dick Van Dyke Show.”

Van Dyke began his life in the theater at just five years old. His career in entertainment has truly been remarkable. He virtually became baby Jesus in one of those Christmas pageants in America’s heartland. For the past 50 years, he has inspired and delighted young and old alike. In fact, he has become a deeply cherished icon of American television and film.

Though he recently turned 99, Van Dyke is far from sedentary, going to the gym three days a week to stay sharp and limber. It’s clear that his wife, Arlene Silver, whom he married in 2012, has had a positive influence on his health. He calls her the world’s best health coach because she offers him energy, humor and encouragement.

“I miss movement. I’ve got one game leg from I don’t know what,” Van Dyke shared, expressing the physical challenges that come with age. He remains optimistic about his health, stating, “I’m so lucky. I don’t have any ache or pain.”

Van Dyke tells the compelling story of his life in his new book. He highlights the importance of sharing knowledge with youth as it pertains to the natural and cultural world. “Well, I had a few more things I wanted to say,” he remarked about his desire to impart knowledge gleaned from his long life.

As he prepares to celebrate this milestone birthday, Van Dyke acknowledges that reaching triple digits is not without its difficulties. “The funniest thing is, it’s not enough. A hundred years is not enough. You wanna live more, which I plan to,” he said.

Van Dyke was most appreciative of the impact he has had on those around him. In particular he relates to people who have experienced journeys of redemption and recovery themselves. “There was a lotta response from people who were having drinking problems who said, ‘Thank you for bringin’ it out into the sunlight,’” he noted.
