The Playa’s stable, hard-packed muddy surface makes room for high-speed activities, making it the perfect place for land speed record attempts. Over the past decade, hundreds of innovators and their teams have wrung out their vehicles on this challenging terrain. They all hope to achieve new speeds in an arena that pushes them and their equipment to the absolute limit.

The Black Rock Playa is famous for its world speed record testing. In addition it is home to of events focused on celebrating art and community. Notably, the annual Burning Man festival attracts thousands of participants who gather to create a temporary city dedicated to self-expression and artistic endeavors. This is what breathes life into the creative wasteland, changing it momentarily into an oasis of art, culture and inspiration. The geological wonders of the Black Rock Desert go well beyond the Playa. Rugged mountains and unusual rock formations make up the rugged landscape outside. This rich, diverse habitat sustains a spectacular variety of wildlife — from ibises to ospreys. These traits make the region an important ecological treasure trove, which harbors great potentials for scientific research and Woodland discovery.
