Jenna Ortega Discusses the Anticipated Return of ‘Wednesday’ for Season 2

Jenna Ortega, the young actress who portrays Wednesday Addams in the hit Netflix series “Wednesday,” recently shared insights about the upcoming second season during an interview with “Good Morning America.” Season 2 launches next week on August 6th! Catch up on Part 1 streaming now, and prepare for Part 2, which premieres on September 3.

As this third season opens, Ortega’s gothic teen avenging angel Wednesday Addams is back at Nevermore Academy — and it’s now she’s trying to figure out how to live. A signature theme of the show will be transformation, especially as it pertains to the challenges confronting youth. In Ortega’s defense, her character has not been a teen in the series thus far, as Ortega noted. It’s an experience that’s unlike any other, for her or for viewers, this season.

Catherine Zeta-Jones is set to return as Morticia Addams, Wednesday’s mysterious mother. Zeta-Jones’ presence as the matriarch of the family introduces complexity to their dynamics that makes them truly fascinating to watch. Steve Buscemi rounds out the story’s cast as Principal Barry Dort. At the same time, Christopher Lloyd, who played Uncle Fester in the 1991 “Addams Family” movie, will join the series as a professor at Nevermore Academy. Ortega spoke highly of Lloyd’s participation with Variety, saying in part,

“Christopher Lloyd I’m still quite shocked by, I don’t know how to process that, his history in film in general, but then also his relation to the Addams Family.”

Considering this first season’s unprecedented success, it is understandable that the team behind “Wednesday” tried their best to continue providing a high-quality product moving forward. Ortega admitted all the weight that comes with lofty expectations. From his own experience, he told us how easy it is to feel singled out or overlooked in those settings. She remarked,

“Steve I’ve had the pleasure of working with twice now. He’s just a cool — he’s a cool guy. I don’t know how to say it. He’s … almost suave in a way — very unassuming and normal, talented. He’s such a pleasure.”

One of Ortega’s most exciting moments from the new season is the thrillingly-choreographed sword fight scene he gets to engage in next to Zeta-Jones. She praised her co-star’s comedic talent, stating,

“I think everybody feels a bit weird because we spend so much time in our heads. We’re just talking to ourselves at the end of the day, so it’s easy to single yourself out or to feel misunderstood.”

She joked that Zeta-Jones should be given “a bar of chocolate” every time she is not funny. Perhaps chocolate is the answer we’ve all been looking for!

“She’s one of the funniest people I have met. I don’t think she gets enough credit for that. She’s unbelievable.”

New and returning fans alike are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Season 2. As for Ortega’s take on Wednesday Addams and the gripping new plotlines to play out at Nevermore Academy. As the show continues to resonate with viewers around the world, Ortega called that response “just beautiful.” She was particularly grateful for the depth of connection that the series has created within its audience.
