Midea Air Conditioners Recalled Due to Mold Concerns

Midea has issued a stunning recall of at least 1.7 million air conditioning units. This step has been taken due to possible mold development, which poses a serious health risk for consumers. The recall affects all of those units sold under multiple brand names. These brands are Midea, Comfort Aire, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Keystone, LBG Products, Mr. Cool, Perfect Aire, and Sea Breeze. This action comes after receiving more than 150 consumer reports of mold growing in these air conditioners.

Yet Midea has received no less than 152 consumer complaints about mold in their air conditioners. In response, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall. Alarmingly, 17 of these reports listed victims experiencing respiratory symptoms. These were vague symptoms that encompassed allergic reactions, coughing, sneezing, sore throats, and infections. Midea is advising consumers to refrain from using the affected units until it is necessary to minimize health risks stemming from exposure to mold.

The recalled room air conditioner models are white in color, and about 22 inches wide and 14 inches high. You will find them in 8000, 10000 and 12000 BTU models. They were carried at all the big box stores across the country—including Best Buy, Costco, Home Depot, and Menards. Furthermore, these reconfigurable units were still purchasable through several widely-used online portals including Amazon.com and Walmart.com.

Midea air conditioners were sold at retail prices ranging from $280 to $500 and were sold between March 2020 and May 2025. The units in question were produced in China and Thailand by Midea. If you have one of the recalled air conditioners, you should definitely look up the model number. This quick step will determine whether your specific unit is included in the recall.

Fortunately, Midea has been proactive on this front, advising consumers to reach out to their customer service line for additional help and guidance. They are providing instructions to safely dispose of the affected units and replacing them where possible.
