Nationwide Bologna Recall Due to Misbranding Issues

Gaiser’s European Style Provisions Inc., a wholesale grocer based in New Jersey, just recently announced. They are in turn recalling over 143,000 pounds of ready-to-eat bologna products. According to a recall announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). This recall is the result of misbranding due to undeclared meat or poultry source materials.

The FSIS found that Gaiser’s product labels contained false and misleading information. In particular, they failed to provide any notice about the presence of pork in some menu items. The USDA mark of inspection on these products includes the number “5385.” Included in the recall is BABUSHKA’S RECIPE CHICKEN BOLOGNA, sold in plastic-wrapped packages. It’s time consumers took a little time to do their research before buying. This includes products that were weighed, wrapped and labeled at the retail point of sale at the time they were sold.

The FSIS was alerted to the problem. In our view, this public alert followed an internal complaint filed through the OIG’s newly established whistleblower hotline. Given these first findings, FSIS started to investigate further. What industry was acknowledging in communications, and what FDA is confirming here, is that many products contained these undeclared source materials on their labels.

FSIS does not anticipate any health concerns associated with this Class III recall. They do encourage consumers to monitor their health and contact a medical provider if they are concerned about becoming ill from consuming these products.

“Although FSIS does not expect any adverse health effects for Class III recalled products and there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products, anyone concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider.” – FSIS

The agency advises consumers to either throw away the affected products or take them back to where they bought them.
