Freddie Prinze Jr. told us last week that his kids aren’t traumatized by the first “I Know What You Did Last Summer” movie. What this really shows is how far horror has come over the years. To say we’re excited about the upcoming sequel—Landing on Your Feet—that’s hitting theaters July 18, would be an understatement. This latest chapter looks to combine that nostalgia with new artistry and storytelling.
The latest chapter in the franchise centers around five friends who attempt to cover up a deadly car accident they inadvertently caused. A year later, that group is now dealing with the chilling fallout of their actions. When a relentless killer, aware of their secret, starts hunting them down, survival becomes the only thing that matters.
Watch Jennifer Love Hewitt celebrating her reprisal into the character of Julie James at the Los Angeles Premiere of Columbia Pictures’ “I Know What You Did Last Summer”. The premiere occurred on July 14, 2025, at The United Theater on Broadway in Los Angeles. She shared that the new movie has all the things that fans loved about the original while adding fantastic new twists.
As screenwriter Sam Lansky said in advance of the project’s release, it was essential to bring elements of the 1985 classic forward into this new version.
“We just really, really wanted to take on what felt special about that first movie and give everyone who wants to go to the movies now the same jolt of adrenaline, the rush, the good time that we had seeing these movies as young people ourselves,” – Sam Lansky
Freddie Prinze Jr. As Ray Bronson in this sequel starring R&B singer Usher, No. He commended the new cast, noting they “won the baton.” He went on to comment about how they were already doing things he couldn’t do at their age.
“They’re so much better than I was at their age. It’s not even funny. I love this cast so much, I respect their work so much, and it was a pleasure to get to work with them.” – Freddie Prinze
Joining Prinze Jr. and Hewitt are Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, and Sarah Pidgeon. Pidgeon, who plays Stevie Ward, described the film as “even splashier in terms of blood and gore” than its predecessors. This escalation of terror is indicative of the genre’s broader trend over the last decade.
“These writers and directors are constantly trying to outdo one another … what was scary five, 10 years ago isn’t scary now.” – Freddie Prinze
Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the film has some great Easter eggs for longtime fans. Perhaps the coolest tribute is a nod to Ray Bronson’s boat from the first movie. An interpreted version of that sign on the wall of his tavern makes this tribute real.
“One of my favorites is Ray Bronson’s boat in the first movie is ‘Billy Blue,’ and I recreated that sign and put it in his bar,” – Jennifer Kaytin Robinson
We can hardly contain our excitement for the film’s premiere! Lansky teased audiences by saying that they’ll find lots of wonderful twists and turns throughout the film.
“There are so many little things that you will find that I think you will be absolutely delighted by.” – Sam Lansky
This combination of familiar faces and fresh talent is designed to appeal to veterans of the franchise and new players, raising the stakes on and off the battlefield. Prinze Jr. shared his enthusiasm at the opportunity to work with such a gifted ensemble. He was under no obligation to retire the torch; rather it was clearly his joy to accept the baton.
