New mom Jamila Islam recently welcomed a new addition to her family! The widow of New York Police Officer Didarul Islam has welcomed the couple’s third child—a boy, whom they’ve named Arham. This hopeful moment comes on the heels of an unspeakable tragedy. On July 28, 2025, Didarul Islam, only 36 years old, fell victim to a mass shooting. The collision occurred in the ground floor lobby and second floor of an office building at 345 Park Avenue. Tragically, four people died, including Didarul Islam.
NYPD Detective First Grade Didarul Islam, who was off-duty during the tragic event. Even while on leave from his official duties, his commitment to his role never faltered. As evidenced by the eulogies sung by his widow, he was indeed a man of faith, integrity, devotion to service and without hypocrisy. In a sad turn of events, the shooting took Didarul’s life. It tragically impacted his family, which now welcomes Jamila and their two sons, Ahyan and Azhaan, to the NYPD family.
The mass shooting claimed the lives of three others alongside Didarul Islam: Wesley LePatner, Aland Etienne, and Julia Hyman. Jamila Islam shared her grief and pride in her husband’s sacrifice, noting the impact it may have had on others present during the shooting.

In thinking back on Didarul Islam’s life, Jamila focused on describing him as more than just an officer. She described him as “a devoted son, a beloved brother and the most loving father.” Yet to her family, he personified their whole universe.
Arham’s yet joyous arrival, on August 17 full of hopes and dreams, has simultaneously filled the Islam family with joy and grief. Though the balloons mark the arrival of new life, their celebration is tempered by the painful absence of Didarul Islam.
Jamila Islam shared her highest admiration for her husband’s dedication to his service and devotion to his family. She commented on how Didarul’s legacy lives on with their children.
