Listeria Concerns Prompt Federal Action Following Deadly Outbreaks

Federal officials have implemented revamped protocols to prevent Listeria infections after several high-profile outbreaks, including a particularly devastating incident linked to Boar’s Head deli meats. This outbreak caused 10 deaths and more than 60 illnesses, illustrating the fatal risks posed by this deadly pathogen.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are an estimated 1,600 illnesses from Listeria infections annually. Unfortunately, over 260 of those cases end in a death. The increased spread of the virus prompted health authorities to act quickly and decisively to protect the public’s health.

>Authorities are currently probing possible contamination in Walmart’s Great Value meatball dinners. Such an issue is likely connected to the same strain of Listeria that resulted in an outbreak tied to chicken fettuccine Alfredo sold at Walmart and Kroger grocery stores. Health officials were able to determine the strain causing the chicken fettuccine outbreak. This outbreak has to date sickened a staggering 17 people and caused three deaths.

Products linked to the original outbreak have best-by dates between September 22 and October 1. Take a look in your refrigerators for these items. Find the digits “50784” and “EST. 47718” found within the USDA plant circle of inspection.

In a statement addressing the situation, Boar’s Head noted, “We have long maintained that the source of the listeria was likely an ingredient supplied by a third party.” While this recognition is somewhat surprising, it highlights the realities of what it means to try to source trace a foodborne illness.

The summer outbreak tied to chicken fettuccine Alfredo prompted a large recall, reflecting the heightened awareness and urgency surrounding food safety. Federal officials are doing a tremendous amount of work to assess and iterate protocols. They stress that consumer vigilance will be key in stopping more infections from occurring.

Listeria normally spreads through contaminated food, it can cause serious and even deadly infections. This is particularly the case for sensitive populations such as pregnant women, newborns, elderly and immunocompromised persons. The CDC advises anyone experiencing symptoms of Listeria infection, which can include fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues, to seek medical attention promptly.
