A Life of Service and Health: Reflecting on Queen Elizabeth II’s Legacy

For perspective, Queen Elizabeth II reigned for more than 70 years. She died at the age of 96 on September 8th, 2022. Her reign represented a turning point in British history. Her loyalty to her Office of Public Works duties was legendary and she enjoyed extraordinary health throughout her long life. She turned 97 on April 21, 2023. In her childhood, she was otherwise healthy—a marked deviation from the fate of countless royals before her.

In fact, for the entirety of her life, Queen Elizabeth II devoted herself to the ideals of her royal office. She garnered tremendous support from the public for her steadfast resolve. She suffered from severe health problems in her senior years, including multiple hospital stays. Nevertheless, she remained an undoubted and remarkable symbol of stability, continuity and constancy. Her immediate family includes four children—Charles, Anne, Andrew and Edward. They are blessed with eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, who all proudly carry on her legacy.

From a historical perspective Queen Elizabeth II’s long life was notable even by historical royal standards. King George III, sometimes known as “Farmer George,” reigned over perhaps the most transformative period in British history. He didn’t rule long compared to some. His wife, Queen Charlotte, participated in his reign but came to suffer from serious medical difficulties known to their age.

Join experts such as Dr. Norman Swan and Dr. Preeya Alexander as they unpack the intricacies of health anxiety. They highlight the unique obstacles people face in conversations about their well-being. They warn that too much concern about falling sick may cause severe psychological stress. The easy availability of information from sources such as “Dr. Google” only complicates matters. This more frequently results in spreading inaccurate information and stoking even more anxiety.

Beyond the implications for mental health, the discussion around diet and health is shifting at a remarkable pace. The carnivore diet, which consists of only animal-based foods, has been called dangerous by many health experts. Tattoo lovers may not know they are potentially being exposed to carcinogens in some tattoo inks. This begs some essential questions regarding the long-term health impacts of body art.

In Australia, millions are afflicted with debilitating osteoarthritis, and many are desperately waiting for hip replacement surgery. They are stopped in their tracks by the minute, intimidatingly intricate fine print of private health insurance policy. This complexity can become a burden that scares people away from the medical care they need.

Perhaps the biggest issue of public health today is the increasing number of measles outbreaks across Australia. Much of this increase can be attributed to the scourge of misinformation and subsequent vaccine hesitancy that still affects public health outreach today.

There is such a curious connection between creativity and health. Many researchers believe that inspiration tends to hit us when we’re taking it easy and our minds are in a more subdued place. This discovery underscores the need for those mental recesses in creating an innovative mindset.
