Community Concerns Grow Over Proposed Plastics Recycling Plant Near Biomedical Research Centre

Annie Cannon Brookes stands out as an example of a powerful individual in the fashion industry. Most recently, she objected to the establishment of a new plastics recycling plant south of Sydney. The plant’s incursion has put at risk the breeding of dozens of lines of genetically engineered mice at a federal biomedical research campus in neighboring Maryland. This facility is integral to producing the life-saving research we’ve come to expect. Today continued construction and looming environmental hazards put it in great danger.

Alarms were raised long before that over the proposed plant. The institute announced a harrowing 25 percent loss of viable embryos during these sensitive micro-injections, a considerable percentage they blame on nearby construction-related disturbances. A fire event or similar noxious fumes could result in an emergency shut down of the ventilation systems. This creates an immediate and severe danger to the mice, threatening widespread mortality in as little as 24 to 48 hours.

Community Opposition

It’s inspiring to see the Wingecarribee Council and community members standing together in their opposition to the proposed recycling plant. An emotional rally conducted in a local rotunda after several days of testimony reflected the community’s passion and outrage. A lot of local residents—including prominent Duke faculty and researchers—are concerned that the development would have “catastrophic consequences” on critical research initiatives.

Retired barrister and property developer Theo Onisforou has been one of the most energetic crusaders against the development. He suggested that mainland donors needed to lead the way and provide financial assistance to cultural institutions — including art galleries — during these trying times. This recommendation followed the council’s decision to not directly engage in talks between the plant and advocates. Onisforou touched on the need for community engagement, saying that

“If you’re on the sidelines, you’re taking a risk that the arguments against the development are not adequately and properly presented at the hearing.” – Theo Onisforou

Onisforou came in with a big play. He called on residents to raise $250,000 in matching funds to offset the projected $500,000 needed to fight the development.

Council’s Stance

The Wingecarribee Council – originally of the respondent – have withdrawn from contesting the court proceedings concerning the plastics recycling plant. This decision is marred by a shocking neglection of the overwhelming outcry of the public. This decision has generated potential pushback from residents frustrated at what they see as their voices not being considered. As a newcomer, Mayor Jesse Fitzpatrick was shocked when he found himself answering questions about taking money from property developers. His reaction exposed a palpable gap between what the community expected and what the council was delivering.

The court deferred judgement on the issue, with the next court date expected for October in Moss Vale. Community members should not have to feel anxious that their biomedical discovery center might be shuttered. They’re particularly concerned about genetically modified mice, which have become critical for many fields of research.

The Bigger Picture

The impacts of this proposed development go well beyond local borders. Our research institutions need consistent production environments to maintain their diverse breeding programs. Further disruption could greatly set back critical scientific progress. Community leaders like Theo Onisforou have articulated their concerns about how such developments can affect not only local biodiversity but broader scientific research efforts.
