Harry McKay Highlights Mental Health After Key Win for the Blues

Harry McKay, the Carlton Blues’ forward, played a pivotal role in his team’s 15-point victory over the St Kilda Saints on Friday night, scoring three goals in a match that served to raise awareness for mental health advocacy. This game, known as “Spud’s Game,” honors the late Danny Frawley and emphasizes the importance of mental well-being in sports and life. McKay returned to the club after leaving for three weeks earlier this season to focus on his mental health. He leveraged his platform to push for candid discussions around issues of mental health.

Fresh off firsthand experience of his own battles, McKay stepped back. When it came to his priorities, he understood mental health not only affected his life but the lives of everyone around him. He stressed the importance of people reaching out for help and being open about their emotions. “A burden that is shared is a burden that is lessened,” he said. “So I think the more we can talk about it, speak to a mate, the better.”

A Strong Comeback

McKay’s return to form has been crucial for the Blues. Consequently, the team now lies ninth on the ladder, with a 4-5 win-loss record. His performance against the Saints not only highlighted his skills but showcased his resilience following a challenging start to the season. “The more games Charlie Curnow and I play together, the better our form will be later in the year,” he noted, referring to his teammate.

Coach Michael Voss was appreciative of McKay’s full contributions, reiterating how valuable the two are on the field together. “Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay need to be able to play together once again,” Voss stressed. He emphasized that this pair is extremely important to the team’s success.

The Importance of Speaking Up

Harry McKay’s path to becoming a mental health advocate continues to inspire fans and players alike. Having fought his own battles earlier this spring, today he makes mental health a priority for himself and encourages others to do the same. The goal, he said, should be to raise awareness and help reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues by fostering openness and encouraging discussion in our communities.

Sixteen years ago, the message imparted through “Spud’s Game” rang true with the young McKay, and it still does today. He’s convinced sporting events can be strong platforms in raising awareness about mental health issues. He expressed gratitude for the support he has received from teammates and fans alike, stating, “Everyone is so supportive and brings so much love.”
