Detective Inspector Anthony Town of Victoria Police said they were able to create a major disruption to what they believe was a parallel criminal network running in north-east Victoria. The lead-up to this inquiry that was launched in 2023. It has led to substantial drug and weapon confiscations, dealing a dangerous setback to criminal activity across the area.
Detective Inspector Town heads a continuing investigation. They have already confiscated more than 5,000 MDMA pills as well as cocaine, cannabis, and a host of other illegal drugs, including fentanyl, steroids, and Viagra. They seized over one kilogram of methylamphetamine, 18 guns and a significant amount of rounds of ammunition. Authorities seized 20 suspected stolen vehicles in the operation.
Arrests Made in Connection with the Investigation
As part of the investigation, five people have been arrested this morning in Cobram and Wangaratta. A 32-year-old male from Wangaratta has since been charged with a number of serious offences. He allegedly trafficked a commercial quantity of MDMA and possessed a traffickable quantity of firearms. A second suspect has been charged with similar crimes. This 36-year-old male, again from Wangaratta, will face court at a later date.
It was the police, and their quick, decisive actions during the arrests, that resulted in the seizure of four firearms. After years of research and public pressure, federal prosecutors announced a record 298 counts. These charges aim at a wide range of people associated with the supposed criminal enterprise.
Police Commitment to Ending Criminal Activities
Detective Inspector Town said that the load moves day to day and it constantly catching criminals and keeping local recovery and police equipment safe.
“This marks one of the most substantial blows on alleged drug and firearms traffickers in our region in recent years,” – Detective Inspector Anthony Town.
He further stated, “We’ve significantly disrupted an alleged criminal network operating right in our own backyard. They put lives at risk, fuel violence and we’re determined to stop them.”
Town’s comments are an example of the lengths that Victoria Police will go to in order to maintain their toxic crusade against drug-related crime. He claimed that the operation has already sent a clear deterrent message to traffickers and criminals.
“This outcome sends a clear message — we will continue to go after those who think they can profit from harm and we won’t stop until every link in the chain is broken,” – Detective Inspector Anthony Town.
Ongoing Efforts Against Crime
The successful dismantling of this network highlights the dedication of law enforcement agencies in Victoria to combat crime and enhance community safety. As investigations move forward, law enforcement officials are continuing to keep a watchful eye for any potential return of illicit behavior inside the area.
