Nick Duigan, the newly appointed Tasmanian Minister for Energy and Renewables, Parks, and Sport, is going on extended medical leave. All this while he himself is getting ready for heart surgery. The life-saving surgery, a valve replacement, is expected to happen in the next two or three weeks. Despite what he’s been through, Duigan is quite realistic, yet hopeful about his recovery. He looks forward to returning to his ministerial responsibilities by April 12, health and recovery permitting.
In a press conference in Devonport earlier today, Duigan got candid about his health issues. He first attributed his issues to a bad chest infection. As the doctors investigated further, they found a more serious condition that required surgery to address.
“I thought it was more of a chest infection,” – Mr. Duigan
Transition of Responsibilities
During Duigan’s leave, a number of extended colleagues will be covering his day-to-day responsibilities. The experienced Deputy Premier Guy Barnett will again take the lead on the energy/renewables portfolio, providing continuity and stability in government and the sector. Environment Minister Madeleine Ogilvie will take a hands-on approach to the parks portfolio. At the same time, Primary Industries Minister Gavin Pearce will assume responsibility for sports, among others.
This interim agreement is intended to help ensure the continued progress and operation of the many portfolios Duigan oversees.
A Message to the Public
In speaking to the public, Duigan used the public platform to highlight the need for stronger health engagement. He encouraged people not to ignore their gut when it comes to their health and to seek care for ongoing symptoms.
“If you feel like something isn’t right, get it checked and don’t let pride get in the way,” – Mr. Duigan
The public backing of his Premier could set Duigan’s mind at ease while facing the most crucial surgery of his life. Rockliff extended best wishes to Duigan as he undergoes surgery on Friday for throat cancer. Yet, he was painfully aware of the burdens these medical interventions can create.
“A bit of a plumbing issue that needs to be addressed, and I’m looking forward to getting my operation done and getting back to work,” – Mr. Duigan
Well Wishes from Colleagues
The Premier’s sentiments reflect the solidarity within the Tasmanian government as they prepare for Duigan’s brief absence. From his colleagues to his constituents, all are hopeful for a full and swift recovery and look forward to his return.
