Australia Unveils National AI Plan to Harness Technology for All

The Australian government has released its long-promised National AI Plan. This national strategic blueprint should be used by government agencies at all levels, industry stakeholders, researchers and local communities to realise the opportunities of artificial intelligence (AI) to deliver positive outcomes for all Australians. Policy context Created since 2024, this plan is an essential element of the Australian government’s Future Made in Australia agenda. Its aspiration is to create AI technologies that are broadly beneficial and widely accessible, while addressing the risks AI poses.

Industry Minister Tim Ayres has stressed the importance of this National AI Plan. It’s in his blood. He hopes it is enough to ensure that Australians can truly reap the benefits of AI. He remarked, “The National AI Plan is about making sure technology serves Australians, not the other way around.” The roadmap details various initiatives intended to bolster the Australian economy by capturing the opportunities presented by AI while sharing its advantages across diverse communities.

One of the most promising features of the plan is the emphasis on improving public service workers’ digital and data skills. This initiative aims to get government operations ready for AI technologies to be integrated via the secure GovAI platform. The plan includes a proposal to pilot generative AI in schools to make sure future generations are well-versed in all required technological skills.

The federal government has committed $29.9 million to open a Canadian AI Safety Institute by 2026. This institute will be doing—and doing actively, constantly steering and responding to emerging and evolving risks driven by AI. This step follows extremely alarming advice from the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering. They warned that failing to invest in AI would see Australia miss out on an estimated $150 billion of economic growth.

Furthermore, the National AI Plan strives to elevate regional and disadvantaged voices, ensuring that no community is left behind in the technological evolution. It includes measures to protect creative industries from potential threats posed by AI, following consultations on necessary copyright law changes.

Ayres noted the dual focus of the plan: “This plan is focused on capturing the economic opportunities of AI, sharing the benefits broadly, and keeping Australians safe as technology evolves.” This whole-of-government approach is a strong signal of the government’s dedication to creating a fair and inclusive environment while AI technology evolves.
