Candid Conversations: Lauren Muratore Discusses the Importance of Open Dialogue About Sex

Lauren Muratore, Australia’s only clinical leading psychosexual therapist and National Chair of the Society of Australian Sexologists. She continued that candid discussion in-person with Wing Kuang in the Weekend One on One segment. They brought it all back to the undeniable need for frank, honest conversation about sex. This is a subject matter that is very much clouded in stigma and in shame.

During the interview, Muratore emphasized the vital role that candid conversations play in understanding and navigating sexual health and relationships. She noted that millions of men and women go unaided with sexual dysfunctions both single and divorced. This ongoing struggle further exacerbates their sense of alienation and disorientation. By creating a space where these kinds of conversations are made commonplace, Muratore hopes that people from all backgrounds can find new knowledge and encouragement.

Muratore is a psychosexual therapist. This experience affords her a unique perspective on the challenges individuals face when attempting to discuss sexual health issues. She emphasized that societal taboos have silenced these conversations, making so many people feel guilty or ashamed. This breakdown in communication results in misinformed partners and unfulfilled desires in the context of close relationships.

Kuang and I discussed the role that education plays in tackling these challenges. Muratore pushes for comprehensive sex education that does not just cover the biological aspects of sex, but the emotional and relational dimensions as well. She focused heavily on the need to raise awareness around understanding one’s own body, pleasure and consent. Understanding the reasons behind conflicts is essential for creating healthy sexual experiences.

In addition, Muratore discussed the therapeutic arts modalities she uses in her practice. Whether via drawing, journaling, or role play, she uses multiple approaches to support her clients in exploring and expressing their thoughts and emotions around sex. This method is not merely a replacement for healing; it equips individuals to more actively shape their sexual health journeys.

Muratore currently holds the position of National Chair of the Society of Australian Sexologists. In this role he works tirelessly to promote the field of sexology throughout Australia. Her new leadership role gives her unprecedented power to shape education policy and raise awareness about the value of inclusive, comprehensive sexual health and education.
