Starting this Sunday, approximately 2.77 million NBN users across Australia will benefit from a significant upgrade that promises to enhance their internet speeds. Under this infrastructure-led upgrade program that is had free fibre-to-the-premises enhancements. Consumers on those eligible broadband plans will benefit from faster download and upload speeds!
As it stands, Australia is sitting a dubious 63rd in the world for fixed broadband speeds, according to the Speedtest Global Index. Even the average download speed in the entire country has made it up to 92 Mbps. Still, changes on the horizon are set to make things significantly better for millions of families. Customers on the 100 Mbps plan will get an increase in their download speeds to as fast as 500 Mbps. In the interim, customers on the 250 Mbps plan will celebrate in speeds increasing to 750 Mbps! Additionally, the maximum upload speeds will increase for their highest-tier plans to 100 Mbps.
“Not everybody’s home modem is capable of going at that speed right now,” said Andy O’Connor, highlighting the importance of ensuring one’s modem is compatible with the new speeds. He noted that “some older models are only capable of going to about 200 or maybe 250 megabits per second,” which could leave some users short-changed if they do not check their hardware.
The federal upgrade program will predominantly benefit customers on three legacy broadband plans which limit data usage. Over 90 percent of NBN’s fixed broadband customers will experience speed increases. Today the average Australian household connects to 50 Mbps broadband plans, but as the recent introductions will soon prove it’s a brave new world on broadband speeds.
Ellie Sweeney, a representative from NBN, expressed confidence in the network’s capabilities, stating, “We take great pride in delivering a reliable, high-speed and high-capacity network to Australians and it is our investment in the network that is enabling us to Accelerate Great, as we say.”
In welcome news to NBN users, Australians can now find out if they’re eligible for a complimentary speed upgrade. If you’ve had trouble getting higher speeds in the past, go for it! These users will need to ensure that their modems are capable of supporting the newly increased speeds. This step is key for them to reap the full reward of those improvements.
