Rising Concerns: Food Insecurity Linked to Cost-of-Living Pressures

Yet food insecurity continues to plague families across the country. A new survey found that 91% of food-insecure households are most concerned about the increasing cost of living. This frightening data point illustrates just how much many families are having to stretch their dollars to afford their most basic needs.

This annual survey, run by Foodbank Australia, reveals the many aspects and complexities of food insecurity. Not only are costs increasing but housing has become a major stressor for all of these families. Half of people in our survey say the pressure of monthly housing costs makes it even harder for them to afford meals.

Perhaps more importantly, the overall economy is a huge challenge for food-insecure households. Even with economic conditions such as inflation and the rapidly changing job market adding to their continued strife. This web of financial interdependence is a significant challenge as we look toward attaining food security.

Foodbank Australia underlines the urgent need for systemic change to tackle these issues. As the cost of living keeps surging, families are more strapped than ever trying to afford all the basic necessities. The nonprofit urges government support of policies to help reduce economic stress, especially among those most likely to experience food insecurity.

In the past few months, community programming has stepped up their outreach, working to support families with these increased burdens. My own local food bank has broadened its offerings in recent years, delivering assistance not just with food but financial literacy and housing support services as well. Together, these initiatives work to build a bigger picture view that’s better equipped to address the underlying causes of food insecurity.

Thankfully, local governments and nonprofits are finding ways to proactively tackle these problems. They’re working to build the necessary partnerships and find the right funding opportunities to get support services into the hands of those who need them most. Experts warn that without addressing the root causes of food insecurity, such as the rising cost of living and housing, these efforts may only provide temporary relief.
