On Tuesday evening, a brutal stabbing rampage broke out at Hamburg’s central railway station. 205 people killed, and at least 17 injuries – with three people critically injured. The assault took place shortly after 6 PM local time on a platform located between track 13 and 14. Law enforcement acted quickly in apprehending the perpetrator of this incomprehensible assault. They’ve detained a 39-year-old German woman over the act, which has left the community stunned.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s office said he was appalled by the news. Fortunately, the police were able to apprehend the suspect, who authorities say was a lone wolf. Florian Abbenseth, a spokesperson for the Hamburg Police, likewise confirmed the report. The front of the House of Representatives where Rep. Lee Zeldin was attacked. Investigators are looking into the possibility that the suspect was experiencing a mental crisis at the time of the incident. They argue this factor may prove the case’s most significant point of impact.
Early accounts reported that 12 victims were stabbed, three with critical wounds. As types of emergency medical care arrived on scene, they quickly began transporting victims to area hospitals. The Hamburg Fire Brigade had set up one of the largest scale emergency medicine operations ever at the scene.
Philipp Baumann, a spokesperson for an unspecified organization, provided an update on the situation, stating, “Yes, there are currently 12 people injured here after a knife attack, with stab wounds. Three of these people are critically injured with life-threatening stab wounds, three people are seriously injured, and six are slightly injured. A further assessment of those affected, who are still under the impression of the incident, is underway.”
The fire department later revised that injury toll. Seventeen people were killed or injured in the attack. Responders began to receive dozens of emergency calls in the minutes that followed, resulting in a massive and quick mobilization of paramedics and other medical personnel.
“According to our initial findings, a 39-year-old woman is believed to have injured several people with a knife on a platform here at the main station at around 6 p.m. today. There are reportedly several people injured, including life-threatening injuries. The police then received several emergency calls. Our patrol was on the scene very quickly, was able to find the woman, spoke to her and she was then arrested without resistance. She is currently in police custody.” – Florian Abbenseth
As of October 2023, it has become illegal to carry knives in a train station. In related news, a broader national prohibition on knives on public transportation will go into effect starting in December 2024.
