Sunscreen Recall Expands as Australia Faces Unseasonably Warm October

In Australia, the government has recalled two additional sunscreen products. This decision is a welcome development as alarm grows over the lack of consistency and reliability behind their SPF ratings. Beauty Beauty’s Mineral Primer and Salus SPF 50+ are now facing criticism. This comes on the heels of a Choice Australia investigation that found most sunscreens do not provide the SPF protection they claim.

The recall involves two specific batches of Outside Beauty’s Mineral Primer: Batch A1902, which expires in October 2026, and Batch 2586, which expires in February 2028. Furthermore, Salus SPF 50+ 1 other affected batch, Batch A1770, expiring July 2026. Consumers who bought these items should stop using them right away.

Publicity for these recalls must have taken place on the official Google website for Outside Beauty and Salus. Crucially, the firms made it clear that no other models from either company are involved in this recall.

A Choice investigation in June generated massive public outcry over improper SPF ratings. It exposed the public health crisis that many of these sunscreens offered SPF protection as low as 4, well short of their claims. Since that probe, seven additional sunscreens have been recalled for similar reasons.

The TGA has already stepped in. They recalled the Outside Beauty & Skincare SPF 50+ Mineral Primer and the Salus SPF 50+ Daily Facial Sunscreen Broad Spectrum. According to the latest information, a total of 15 sunscreens are currently in review or have voluntarily stopped supplying.

This recall comes during a particularly hot and dry October in Australia, with a heatwave forecasted to affect eastern states. Temperatures are expected to hit as much as 16 degrees Celsius over average, with Sydney at risk of hitting 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38°C) by Wednesday. The intense heat poses real risks of fire threat across regions including Sydney, the Hunter and Illawarra.
