Weather Forecasts for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day Across Australia

As Australia gears up to bring in the New Year, not all Australian cities will have the typical sunny and summery conditions. On New Year’s Eve, Adelaide will enjoy a warm, very sunny day. The Bureau of Meteorology is calling for a top of 34 degrees Celsius with a 90 percent chance of not getting wet. Other large metros will see a mixed bag, weather-wise. These are the same conditions that will characterize congressional celebrations as we all close out 2025 and welcome in 2026.

Melburnians can expect a mainly cloudy New Year’s Eve this year. There is a forecasted 40% chance of rain in the early morning. The weather forecast calls for a high of 27 degrees. On New Year’s Day, Melbourne will be mostly cloudy. It indicates that there’s a 25 percent chance that the city will get at least 1 mm of rain. As January progresses, we are treated to more interesting and varied clouds in the sky. Look for a 90 percent chance that it will remain rain-free and dry!

Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, is expected to see dry conditions on New Year’s Eve. Winds expect to be light and variable becoming east-southeast 15 to 25 km/h. This February, Hobart is forecasted to reach record highs of up to 35 degrees Celsius. This forecast would put it among the warmest locations in Australia today!

In Brisbane the skies will be sunny and the mercury rising, with temperatures expected to top 33 degrees Celsius. Light winds will be gusting from the north east at 15 to 20km/h all day. Perth will be basking in the heat on New Year’s Eve. With a forecast maximum of 33 degrees, it will overtake Douglas as Australia’s hottest city!

Sydney’s New Year’s Eve weather forecast is developing in favor of mostly sunny skies with only a low chance of rain. The high temperature is expected to reach 26° C. As the New Year brings Sydney sunburnt, Sydney will start to move right into overcast skies. By January 1, 2026, there’s a 25 percent likelihood of receiving less than 1 mm of rainfall.

Yet, in stark contrast to these generally favorable conditions, Darwin is poised to ring in 2026 on a very rainy note. Forecast conditions indicate a high probability of severe storms. A 50 percent chance of getting at least 5 mm of precipitation, and a 50 percent chance for 20 mm or more.

These are the shifts in climate that the BoM has been raising for Australians to anticipate as they celebrate the New Year. With temperatures varying from city to city, 30 degrees Celsius in Adelaide, 27 degrees in Melbourne, and 22 degrees in Hobart, the diverse climates across the nation will influence outdoor gatherings and celebrations.
