Gateshead Woman Sentenced for Benefit Fraud After Failing to Declare Inheritance

Lyndsey Graham, 47, of Gateshead, has received a suspended prison sentence for her fraudulent claims for benefits. She failed to report the six-figure inheritance she inherited. Due to this deception, this led to an almost £12,000 overpayment in Universal Credit welfare benefits. Her scheme occurred between April 2021 and January 2023. During that time, Graham fraudulently pocketed £11,901.

Graham’s legal troubles started when she fraudulently received Universal Credit for almost two years. In fact, she was ineligible, as she did not disclose her £44,000 inheritance. She notified the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) each time there was a change in her circumstances. This involved submitting a sick note and re-registering her address on Whitehall Road, yet she neglected to report an inheritance that may disqualify her from receiving the benefit.

At trial, Graham confessed to the fraud on the very first day of trial. The court intervened because of her decisions. They handed her a 12-month community order, ordering her to do 80 hours of community service. Her case is a reminder of how important it is to be truthful about one’s financial situation when applying for public benefits.

She didn’t stop with fraudulent claims for stolen items — she even asked for additional money for replacement clothing. She asked for support through a one-off cost of living payment. These actions make her situation worse. On one hand, they show her knowledge of what she needs financially, on the other hand, they conceal a whole bunch of assets.

By the way, benefit fraud has terrible consequences. It chips away at the integrity of the social support systems that are meant to aid those in genuine need. Government officials are making clear that they intend to prosecute those who misstate their finances. This makes sure that benefits are allocated equitably and prudently.
