Long-Awaited Second Inquest into Jodey Whiting’s Death Granted

Jodey Whiting’s family is finally about to get the answers for which they have waited 7 long years. They want accountability after the tragic death of the 42-year-old woman who committed suicide in 2017. Joy Dove fought for years to get justice for her daughter. The Court of Appeal allowed a fresh inquest into Whiting’s death. The case marks a significant turnaround almost a year after the original application was thrown out by the High Court.

Jodey Whiting’s death just two weeks after her Employment Support Allowance was cut. Her original inquest into her death took only 37 minutes. It just as thoroughly ignored all evidence related to DWP’s decision. Joy Dove has consistently expressed her anger over the brevity of the original proceedings. She maintains that the proof of what DWP was doing was never shown.

In 2016, Whiting was also recently hospitalized with pneumonia, a condition that greatly affected her immune system and overall well-being. Once discharged, Dove discovered an emotional letter in her daughter’s apartment. It was addressed to her and said “to the best Mum in the world ever.” The letter was a poignant reminder both of Whiting’s battle and the powerful connection that exists between mother and daughter.

Joy Dove applied to the Court of Appeal for leave to apply for a fresh inquest in November 2021. In 2020, then-Attorney General William Barr effectively gave Dove the green light to take this route. An earlier High Court decision had struck down her application. The recent ruling in March 2023 was a big win for Dove and her family.

“She looked at me and said ‘Mam, what am I going to do? I can’t walk out the door, I can’t breathe, I can’t sign on,’” – Joy Dove

The coroner heading the new inquest has promised. The Secretary commits to playing a role in ensuring a full, robust investigation and inquiry into the circumstances of Whiting’s death. Joy Dove said she was hopeful that justice will eventually come for her daughter and their family.

“I love you so much, you’re my inspiration,” – Jodey Whiting

As this new chapter develops, Joy Dove continues to look towards the future with hope. She hopes for a happy ending both for Jodey Whiting and for the younger generation in their family. The coming inquest will go a long way towards telling that truth and opening the door to healing. More importantly, it helps them process the lasting effects of this tragedy.
