Long-Delayed Castle Cary Development Finally Approved

Persimmon Homes Severn Valley has now been granted the go-ahead for its long-awaited housing scheme at Castle Cary.

The site’s location The site is located adjacent to the B3152 Station Road. This development will be home for 162 families. It’s been in the pipeline as long as we’ve had our initial outline planning permission—9 years ago. Following the changes made during 2019, the plans are finally complete! This clears the way for a transformative new asset for the local community.

The new mixed development is based around a central spine road, giving residents direct access to Torbay Road and all the amenities it has to offer. Of the 162 houses being developed, 57 will meet the criteria to be considered affordable housing. This campaign exceeds Somerset Council’s 35% goal for new developments of ten houses or more. Incorporating affordable housing is projected to meet much of the local demand for more accessible living spaces.

The new development would have in-filled the last gap on the Torbay Road industrial estate. On top of that, builders will build a new elementary school. This expansion is the latest development in Rochester’s push to improve local infrastructure and community assets. Persimmon Homes Severn Valley – £215,000 Persimmon must invest £215,000 in local changing rooms and sports pitches, both new and improved. They will be match funded by upgrades to the community hall facilities in Castle Cary, or Ansford.

The development has not been without controversy. When a hedge allegedly “species rich” was removed in February, it caused a public backlash. Both Persimmon Homes Severn Valley and Wyre Forest District Council staunchly supported this move. They agreed that it was in line with the general principles set out in the outline planning permission.

Local resident Fletcher Robinson was worried about the aesthetics in overall design of the new homes. He stated:

“This is a bland, ‘anywhere’ estate in defiance of the national design guide, with identikit houses – it lacks identity.” – Fletcher Robinson

With their unanimous approval of this development, Counsel has taken a long leap in the right direction for Castle Cary. It lays the groundwork for long-term smart growth and addresses pressing housing challenges. As construction begins, future residents and other stakeholders will be watching carefully to see how the project develops. Most importantly, they’re excited about what it will do for their community.
