Revised Plans for CI Tyres Site Aim to Increase Affordable Housing

The new Guernsey housing association has just been granted planning permission. On the former CI Tyres site at La Charotterie they intend to create 69 new dwellings. However, despite the long, expensive planning process, this decision, ratified by elected county and city officials, represents an astounding jump from the previous 57 homes authorized. Chief Operating Officer and new Chief Planner Lisa de Kooker is excited about the updated proposals. She hailed the approval as a “very positive step” toward mellowing the island’s chronic housing shortage.

In May, the housing association resubmitted its plans to include additional housing units, reflecting a commitment to providing “high-quality, affordable homes for islanders.” The site is surrounded by existing residential properties, making it a fitting location for new developments that aim to integrate more homes into the community.

“An eye opened Lisa de Kooker spoke highly of this project’s impact on local residents and their lives. “The next stage will be to review the planning conditions carefully and progress the construction tender,” she stated. This means that although planning permission is granted, a number of other moves must take place before construction can start.

If all goes according to plan, construction might start as soon as early 2026, with the project slated for full completion by late 2027. In principle, the housing association should now be able to choose a contractor. Their ultimate aim is to complete construction plans and have these homes delivered on time.

Historic approval of these 69 new homes — bold action to tackle housing shortages on the island. UK local authorities and housing associations are getting busy again to deliver the kind of quality, more sustainable places to live. They are focused on creating a better future for their community members.
