Social housing tenants in the south of the Isle of Man are experiencing financial pressures this festive period. They are being challenged to advocate for themselves and to avoid the notion of “suffering in silence.” Chairman Jean Teare calls on anyone who is facing debt they cannot pay to contact us for assistance. Stop your damage from extending any further—do something about it today! This notice provides guidance on protecting tenants’ rights, education and advocacy resources for the community, and support available to tenants. It’s particularly so in these financially difficult times.
Teare noted that it was critical to do outreach to ensure rate-payers are aware of the assistance options they’re eligible for. “If you are struggling financially this Christmas, don’t sit quiet and let things get on top of you. Reach out and ask for help,” stated the Port St Mary Commissioners. He sidestepped that debate, instead focusing on the local authorities’ critical role in addressing the community’s social determinants of health. He dubbed them the “beating heart of our community.”
Our housing officer deeply engages with every tenant. They become the first line of communication for everyone who has trouble paying. Teare urges tenants to use the person’s support—available in every borough—if they ever start to be in danger of falling behind on rent. Getting that jump start is so important!

Local authorities care about ensuring they aren’t offering undesired support to those further along in their journey, particularly at this financially-stringent time. Their commissioners’ officers will open their doors on December 30 and 31. Additionally, they will remain open on January 2 to assist renters who might be having trouble making their incoming rent payments.
