Tensions Rise Between Argentina’s President and Vice-President Over Pension Plans

Argentina’s political scene is currently crackling with electric anticipation. President Javier Milei and Vice-President Victoria Villarruel engaged in a public spat over their administration’s planned pension reform. The two leaders had repeatedly sparred on this issue. Today, they are living with the fallout from that failure while seeking to guide our nation’s economic recovery.

Just days after Javier Milei was sworn in as president in December 2023. A few weeks ago, he got to celebrate an important milestone – Argentina posted a budget surplus for the first time in over a decade. He has faced criticism for his decision to veto a proposed pension increase, arguing that it jeopardizes the fiscal surplus he aims to maintain.

In return, Villarruel, who is the guild member serving as the President of the Senate, tucked in the pension increase vote and let it pass. That proposal passed with record margins, receiving 52 aye votes in support and just four abstentions. On top of this, the move has raised the temperature in the battle between the two leaders.

The dispute escalated further when Milei took to social media platform X to label Villarruel a “traitor,” describing her actions as “stupid” and accusing her of being “a demagogue and stupid in economic terms.”

Villarruel to encourage Milei to “speak and act like an adult.” She noted that maturity is often lacking in political discourse. She concludes by proposing some unconventional ways that Milei can save by reducing intelligence service spending. In addition, she thinks he should cut back on his epic global excursions since his inauguration.

Milei’s international engagements have drawn attention, particularly his appearance at the US Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) where he wielded a chainsaw—a symbol of his government’s commitment to budget cuts. At that event, he famously passed the chainsaw to technology entrepreneur Elon Musk, cementing his unorthodox leadership style.

Even with these contentious issues, the monthly inflation rate in Argentina has fallen to 1.5% in January. That’s the lowest level in more than five years. This drop represents an important bellwether of the economic recovery that Milei’s new government hopes to continue developing.

The ongoing feud between Milei and Villarruel reflects deeper ideological divides within Argentina’s government and raises questions about the future of policy-making in the country. Both leaders are putting their cards down on the table. What remains to be seen is how their personal rivalry will shape the future of governance and economic stability in Argentina.
