Torbay Council has made significant strides in addressing the housing crisis in the region by approving two new projects that will deliver 32 homes. The council’s cabinet gave the initiative overwhelming support. With Devon’s waiting list of over 1,600 households growing every day, this plan is just what’s needed to deliver desperately needed homes.
This means that half of the approved projects include plans for local authority housing, including that provided by Devon County Council. Torbay Council is already on the move! They will need to borrow funds to purchase up to 18 homes that remain unsold in Torquay and Paignton having failed to generate buyers while on the open market. The council’s plan would see the authority purchase 14 newly-constructed properties in Torquay and four in Paignton. They understand that there is an opportunity to add some redevelopment onto these sites that have not sold well.
I can’t overstate the significance of these new developments,” said Councillor Alan Tyerman. He knew the figures didn’t sound impressive. Yet, these represent an important step towards meeting the increasing housing needs in the community.
“All we can do is take one step forward at a time.” – Councillor Alan Tyerman
The council’s recent move to buy a plot of land in Brixham to develop more housing itself demonstrates its seriousness about growing the available stock. She also emphasized the urgency of the housing crisis, as did Councillor Tyerman. He understood that while we can’t possibly end the waiting list, every bit helps.
The intended places for the new residential spaces are what the administration calls “well-located” areas to redevelop. We anticipate that residents can start moving into all 32 homes by the end of 2025. Plymouth City Councillor Nick Bye was very positive about the worth these projects have added to their community. He underscored that getting these properties in hand addresses pressing housing priorities. It fosters lifelong opportunities for local residents.
“By securing it we can make sure it is developed in a way that meets our housing needs.” – Councillor Alan Tyerman
The council’s proactive approach is a welcome attempt to take the pressure off the short supply of homes available for families hoping to live in Devon. With continued support and strategic planning, Torbay Council is taking essential steps towards resolving the ongoing housing issues faced by its community.
