Celebrated Australian Actor Gerard Kennedy Passes Away at 93

Gerard Kennedy, one of the greats of Australian television and theatre, has passed away peacefully on 5 October, aged 93. He died at a nursing home in Gosford on the New South Wales Central Coast. Kennedy’s career over many decades was expansive. Throughout his life he won awards and accolades for his extraordinary contributions to the entertainment world, mesmerizing listeners, fans, and fellow creatives.

Just a few weeks ago, Kennedy celebrated his 93rd birthday, a joyous occasion in a life devoted to the performing arts. His first love was the stage, but he was a master of all mediums. He co-starred with Liz Burch in the long-running show “The Flying Doctors.” In part, it was this role that earned him the undying friendship of millions of fans.

A Legacy of Iconic Roles

Kennedy’s starring roles in such television series made him a household name in Australia. He reached an iconic status through his first leading role, that of Detective Frank Banner in the police drama “Division 4.” The show consistently drew audiences deep into its acclaimed six-year run. This role would go on to win him two Gold Logies for the most popular personality on Australian television. It’s a testament to his genius and the enormous influence he had on audiences.

Along with “Division 4,” Kennedy proved his dramatic range in creating iconic baddies with a fierce temper on the crime serial “Homicide.” He was the lead in a string of hugely popular drama series and miniseries such as Tandarra, Against the Wind, and The Last Outlaw. His talent for portraying rich and complicated characters, whether hero or villain, made him one of the great actors of his generation.

“He was just the most self-effacing, softly spoken, absolutely beautiful person.” – Bennett

Kennedy’s work extended beyond television. He first cut through in 2008 with his portrayal of gangland patriarch Graham “the Munster” Kinniburgh in the scandalous miniseries “Underbelly.” In 2013, he accepted that challenge again with his role in the horror movie “Wolf Creek 2.” His last acting credit was in 2015 on the ABC television series, “Glitch.”

Recognition and Humility

During a stellar career that spanned over five decades, Kennedy won many accolades, in recognition of which he received two Silver Logies and three Penguin Awards. He received many awards and honors, but he remained deeply modest at all times. Rather than display his awards, he liked to have them hidden.

“Some people use their Logies as a doorstop or pop them on the loo so that everybody gets to see them.” – Bennett

Recall by colleagues — and admiration — stretch well beyond Kennedy’s legislative accomplishments. Liz Burch praised him on social media as “a lovely man,” reflecting the sentiments of many who worked alongside him throughout his career.

“My God, how fabulous to see you, I loved you in this, and I remember as a kid watching you in that.” – Peers of Gerard Kennedy

Impact on Australian Television

Kennedy’s impact on Australian television is impossible to measure. His ability to consistently create engaging characters that were both relatable and inspiring struck at the core of his success. Although he was on screen for a brief time, his performances captivated audiences and inspired countless would-be actors currently working in the industry.

Bennett remarked on Kennedy’s impact, stating, “That is where all of a sudden people thought, ‘Who is this amazing actor.’” Truly, Kennedy’s genius and commitment to his artistry were a profound infusion into Australian showbiz.
