Former Aged Care Campaigner Sentenced for Child Exploitation Charges

Stewart Anthony Johnston, a prominent figure in exposing abuse at the Oakden aged care facility, was sentenced on Thursday for possessing child exploitation material. Johnston, 51, from Angaston, appeared in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court before Magistrate Karim Soetratma, after pleading guilty to the charges. The court set a head sentence of one year and 22 days, with a non-parole period of six months and 15 days, making Johnston eligible for parole in September.

Johnston gained public attention in 2017 when he played a pivotal role in exposing abuse at the Oakden aged care facility, where his own mother was a resident. His efforts contributed to the closure of the facility and the release of a scathing report by the State's Independent Commissioner Against Corruption. The report outlined 13 recommendations aimed at improving the sector.

In the lead-up to the 2022 federal election, Johnston launched his own political party, Care Watch Australia. He envisioned the party as a vehicle for "real change" in the aged care sector. Despite these ambitions, Johnston's legal troubles emerged when he was charged with possessing child exploitation material at Mannum in May 2023.

Magistrate Soetratma addressed Johnston during sentencing, emphasizing the gravity of the offense. The court's decision underscores the seriousness with which child exploitation material charges are treated within the legal system. Johnston's case has drawn significant public attention, given his prior role as a campaigner for aged care reform.

The Oakden facility's closure and the subsequent recommendations for sector improvement marked a significant turning point for aged care oversight. However, Johnston's recent conviction complicates his legacy as an advocate for reform. His plea last year acknowledged his involvement in possessing illegal material, leading to Thursday’s sentencing.
