Grace Baba Makes History as First AFLW Player Suspended Before Debut

History was made when the South Freemantle teenager, Grace Baba, was introduced into the AFL Women’s (AFLW) league. She’s the first player ever to receive a suspension before her official debut. The incident that young tiger hit the Richmond Laura McClelland during Hawthorn’s practice match Sunday. Due to this, they were issued a one-game forfeit, even with their dominant 37-point win against the Tigers.

The free kick in question was off the ball as Baba and McClelland fought for body position deep into Hawthorn’s attacking 50. Video filmed from behind the goals captures the moment Baba lands a fist to McClelland’s gut with her right fist. The blast from the third explosion knocked McClelland to her knees. Baba’s performance and upside were widely anticipated after the Hawks made her their first-ever selection in last year’s college draft. This tragic accident, though, put a damper on those hopes.

Impact of the Suspension

Baba’s suspension means she will miss Hawthorn’s highly anticipated AFLW season-opener against Brisbane at Springfield Central Stadium in Ipswich on August 17. Baba is devastated by this loss. Her squad has definitely been putting in the work this year to get ready for the new season on the horizon. The Hawks were looking to carry on some positive vibes from their impressive practice match win. McDonagh and Bodey turned in excellent performances that solidified the win.

In fact, four players scored hat tricks, with Aine McDonagh leading the way with three goals. Her remarkable ability paved the way for the Hawks’ dominating performance. Greta Bodey equally had a strong impact on the field, contributing two goals to the team’s score. That one victory invigorated a beleaguered team, restoring spirits and instilling confidence. That Grace Baba suspension is a dark cloud hanging over their preparations.

Looking Ahead

With the regular season just around the corner, the Hawks will have to come together and figure out a plan moving forward without one of their budding young stars. Baba’s absence will undoubtedly challenge the team’s dynamics as they adapt their game plan for the opening match against Brisbane. Coaches and players alike will need to get creative to replace the production and energy lost with Baba’s suspension.

This AFLW season is bound to be the most competitive yet and teams will be looking to send a message from the outset. Hawthorn, with their recent success in practice matches, will aim to leverage this momentum when they face off against Brisbane. Given Baba’s plight, one can bet discipline and focus will be a big point of emphasis from the coaching staff.
