Greens Deputy Mehreen Faruqi Comments on Election Results and Future Prospects

In a recent interview with the National TDM Network, Mehreen Faruqi, recently elected deputy leader of the Australian Greens, offered her perspective on these recent electoral victories. She pointed out their importance for Australia’s political landscape. Faruq i emphasized that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is still very much a contender, despite the challenges faced by her party. She came on ABC Radio National Breakfast to discuss it, in a fun and fast conversation. While on the show, she explained many of the reasons behind those election results.

As far as you can, please keep this unfortunate cat in its bag. This sentiment, she contended, shaped the decisive electoral and voting conditions at play in the elections on Saturday. The Greens lost badly in all their strongholds. Most significantly, in Griffith, previous MP Max Chandler-Mather was defeated by Labor’s Rennee Coffey.

Implications of Election Results

The outcome of last week’s election has raised big questions about the direction of each major party and of the minor parties, including the Greens. According to Faruqi, this election shows just how important Labor’s preferences can be in electing Greens senators.

“Greens senators will now be elected on the back of Labor preferences.” – Mehreen Faruqi

She pointed out that historically, those preferences have usually led to a swing to the Greens. Faruqi acknowledged that her party’s decision to block sensible policies from the Albanese government might have contributed to their losses.

Faruqi reminded the crowd that thousands of votes have yet to be counted. These uncounted ballots can dramatically alter the status quo.

“Well, there are still thousands of votes to be counted … as many as 15,000 absentee and declaration votes that have yet to be sorted and counted.” – Mehreen Faruqi

Criticism of Parliamentary Conduct

Faruqi called out the behaviour of her fellow crossbenchers, her colleague Max Chandler-Mather, for his conduct in parliament without blinking, calling it “offensive”. This heavy criticism comes in the wake of his dramatic, nail-biting defeat and provokes thoughts about the caucus’s internal discussions inside the Greens.

The loss in Griffith has been interpreted as a broader repudiation of the party’s stance on various issues, particularly by figures like Peter Dutton, who stated:

“The loss of the Greens’ seats in the House of Representatives is a repudiation of the antisemitism of the Greens and a vindication of Peter Dutton’s decision to put them last.” – Peter Dutton

Faruqi’s comments highlight the difficulty of Democrats’ position and the importance of looking inward as they look to move forward in this toxic political climate.

Future Prospects for Labor and the Greens

Political tensions are understandably high. Fingers crossed All eyes are on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as he finalises the makeup of his new ministry ahead of next Tuesday’s expected swearing-in. On that same day, should all go as planned, he will be sworn in for his second term by the governor-general. The reshuffle will see key roles such as Stephen Jones’s assistant treasurer position and Bill Shorten’s portfolio for NDIS up for grabs.

Despite those losses, Faruqi is hopeful about the future of the Greens. She reiterated that voters had perhaps turned their backs on her political party. There are many other areas where they demand accountability from a future Labor government.

“I think that was a factor in some of the lower house seats. But also those same voters clearly wanted us to hold a potential labor government to account, which is why we also achieve record-high Senate votes.” – Mehreen Faruqi

Political analysts are examining the politics of those election results. It’s time for both major parties and minor leagues, including the Greens, to readjust their plans going ahead.
