Jess Carter, a 27-year-old defender for the England national team and Gotham FC, intends to take a hiatus from social media during Euro 2025. She did this after she herself had been subjected to the same type of racist harassment online. Following Carter’s performance in England’s quarterfinal win against Sweden, racist vitriol was directed at her on the social media platform X. Though she did start all four matches of the tournament, she was terribly ineffective on the pitch.
Carter’s father is African-American, and her experience underscores what so many of today’s diverse athletes continue to face today. The systemic abuse she experienced has justifiably ignited public outrage and condemnation around the world from soccer organizations and some of her U.S. In light of this incident, UEFA, Gotham FC, the National Women’s Soccer League, and The Lionesses have all issued statements expressing their unwavering support for Carter.
Support from the Football Community
Even FIFA President Gianni Infantino jumped into the at-first-three-person chorus calling out the racism aimed at Carter. His main point was that no player should have to suffer discrimination while they are at the top of their game. Infantino stated:
“We stand with Jess. We stand with every player and every individual who has suffered from racist abuse. No player should be discriminated against in any way; they should be free to be at their very best on the pitch.”
To his credit, Infantino pledged that he would stand behind whatever action needs to be taken to rectify the situation. In addition, he pledged to make data available to punish those responsible for the abuse.
Teammates Rally Around Carter
Lotte Wubben-Moy, Carter’s teammate on the England National Team, tweeted in favor of her. As for Simone Biles, she revealed her intention to withdraw from social media as well. This powerful display of solidarity is a testament to the bond between teammates and their collective opposition to hate in all its forms.
The Lionesses have doubled down on their support too, writing that they’re standing in solidarity with Carter through this dark time. This show of solidarity signals the importance of working toward a safe and supportive environment. Every athlete should be allowed to compete without fear of discrimination or harassment.
Ongoing Investigation into Racist Abuse
We continue to personally investigate the racist abuse directed at Jess Carter. In response, FIFA has committed to provide technical assistance to help address these challenges in football. Through this work, the national organization hopes to hold offenders accountable and prevent individuals from getting shot.
While Carter’s experience shed light on the ever present issue of racism in sports, there still needs to be justice served. She is now focusing on her lucky performance Euro 2025. At the same time, debates over inclusivity and equality within the sport are reaching new heights.
