The New South Wales (NSW) government has initiated an urgent independent inquiry following serious complaints regarding inappropriate conduct at the NSW Office of the Children's Guardian. The inquiry comes after allegations surfaced about a baby shower held at the office late last year, which reportedly included sperm-themed games deemed inappropriate by employees.
The Public Service Association (PSA) received these complaints in January this year. Employees raised concerns not only about the specific nature of the baby shower but also highlighted a broader culture of bullying and inappropriate behavior within the office. In response, NSW Families and Communities Minister Kate Washington announced her decision to establish an independent inquiry to thoroughly investigate these allegations.
"The allegations are serious and disturbing," stated Minister Washington, underscoring the gravity of the situation. She emphasized the need for immediate action and transparency in addressing these concerns. The inquiry will not only evaluate the specific complaints but also examine the overall workplace culture at the NSW Office of the Children's Guardian.
Steve Kinmond, who has served as NSW Children's Guardian since January 2023, has agreed to step aside during the inquiry. It remains unclear whether he was present at the controversial baby shower. The PSA has expressed its support for the inquiry, with assistant general secretary Troy Wright stating, "Allegations around bullying and inappropriate behavior and nepotism in the senior ranks" must be investigated thoroughly.
The baby shower incident has raised alarm among staff members, igniting concerns about the environment in which they work. Employees have voiced their distress over what they perceive as a problematic culture within the office, prompting calls for significant change.
Minister Washington's swift action to establish an independent inquiry reflects her commitment to addressing these issues head-on. The PSA plans to offer its full assistance throughout the investigation process, ensuring that all concerns are adequately addressed.
