Queensland Premier David Crisafulli is calling for a fair hearing for suspended Townsville Mayor Troy Thompson. The Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) is conducting a long-running inquiry. Their goal is to put Thompson’s military, education and business credentials under the microscope. Crisafulli pointed to the importance of being able to hold the investigation free from outside political influence.
Thompson has been on paid leave – salary, reportedly, $225,000/yr – since last November. For now, he remains in limbo, awaiting the results of the CCC’s ongoing investigation. Crisafulli indicated he was looking forward to this report, and it’s unclear when it will be due. Not only does he stick to his guns about his big switch. Thompson has said he would not return to his post until the report is completed.
Leadership and Accountability in Townsville
Crisafulli emphasised to Townsville’s council that strong leadership was urgently needed. He stated, “It’s important that the opportunity for this city to get the leadership it deserves can happen.” The Premier is most certainly right in thinking the city can’t achieve its maximum potential. He insisted too that Thompson’s story shines a “dark shadow” over local government.
The Premier has not excluded extending Thompson’s suspension pending the outcome of the CCC’s investigation. This decision highlights Crisafulli’s dedication to helping the local government move forward, free from any remaining doubt about the competency of its leadership.
“I’ve been very clear, he won’t be coming back until that report is handed down.” – David Crisafulli
The Suspension and Its Implications
Thompson’s suspension came after allegations were made that sent the CCC looking into Thompson’s credentials. Although Thompson was able to get a resolution from Thompson, Crisafulli still would not discuss the possibility of reinstating the mayor.
In response to his suspension, Thompson remarked, “Respectfully, the premier is currently withholding recognition from a democratically elected mayor, without the benefit of natural justice or due process.” He raised the risk that repeated accusations could jeopardize his job. He went on to insist that no conclusions or accusations have yet been reached regarding him.
“It is important to emphasise that the current CCC situation involves allegations only. There has been no finding, no criminal charge and no opportunity for the application of natural justice.” – Troy Thompson
Assurance of an Ongoing Investigation
Crisafulli reassured the public that the report concerning Thompson’s case is actively being pursued and “not sitting on anyone’s desk.” He reiterated the need for the CCC to function completely free from political meddling. This is a critical first step towards ensuring a fair process.
As the investigation unfolds, Queensland’s political landscape watches closely, awaiting clarity on the future of Townsville’s leadership and the implications for accountability within local government.
