Northern Territory Police Commissioner Michael Murphy has been stood down following an Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) probe, which found him guilty of "incompetent" conduct. The investigation revealed that Commissioner Murphy played a pivotal role in recruiting a close friend to a high-ranking position within the police force. This development marks the second sudden departure of an NT police commissioner within just two years, adding to the already volatile situation within the territory's law enforcement leadership.
The ICAC report, which initially kept Commissioner Murphy's name anonymous, disclosed that he had participated in the hiring panel that appointed his friend to a significant public service role. This revelation prompted NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro to declare his position "untenable." Ms. Finocchiaro announced the termination of Commissioner Murphy's employment just over a week after being made aware of the findings.
"Today, I informed Commissioner Murphy he has lost the confidence of the government," said Lia Finocchiaro.
In light of these findings, Commissioner Murphy was offered the opportunity to resign, which he declined. The entire executive board of the NT Police Association also called for him to tender his resignation. Despite being asked to take leave immediately, Commissioner Murphy will receive six months' pay following the termination of his contract, in accordance with his 2023 appointment terms.
"The terms and conditions of his appointment in 2023 requires payment of six months remuneration upon termination," stated Lia Finocchiaro.
This leadership shake-up mirrors a similar incident that occurred in 2023 when Jamie Chalker, the previous NT Police Commissioner, was forced to retire amidst escalating crime concerns. The repeated upheaval in the position highlights ongoing challenges within the Northern Territory's police force.
In response to Commissioner Murphy's departure, Assistant Commissioner Martin Dole will temporarily assume the role of acting commissioner. As the NT Police Department navigates this leadership transition, it remains to be seen how this will impact ongoing law enforcement efforts and public safety strategies.
