On Tuesday, an unexplained boom shook the Mildura area in north-west Victoria. Residents and experts alike are now in a race against time to get answers. At approximately 2 PM, local residents reported hearing a very loud noise which they indicated was a “bang” or “boom.” This noise rattled entire neighborhoods, leading thousands to jump on social media to indicate how disturbed they were.
Andrew Kynaston at work on a home in Mildura when he first heard the sound. Even 50 years later, Buck gave a detailed account of that scene. “There was quite a loud noise and the windows vibrated,” he said. The occurrence piqued the imagination and alarm of hundreds of local residents. The reports kept coming—including as far away as Boundary Bend, more than 100 kilometers or nearly 70 miles from Mildura’s center.
Seismology Research Centre Analysis
A brief soundwave was recorded at the Seismology Research Centre station in Mildura at precisely 2:13 PM. Then, Dr. Dan Sandiford noted, this pulse suggested something closer to an atmospheric or surface explosion phenomenon. It was utterly incompatible with the very nature of an earthquake. He stated, “The only sources of big, naturally occurring atmospheric sound waves that I know of are meteors, lightning, and volcanoes.”
What was telling was that every other major station in Renmark and Lake Boga had been reporting data. Dr Sandiford explained. This absence meant that the event was unlikely a standard atmospheric explosion. He pointed out that if it was a meteor or some sort of air burst explosion that made the noise, folks at those locations would likely have heard it. As such, he ruled out a quarry blast among the possible causes. Each one of those blasts is intently followed back at their stations throughout Australia.
Resident Reactions
Helen Jack, yet another resident of Mildura, explained what it was like in dramatic detail. After hearing the bang, she rushed outside, noting that it “felt like the vibration was on the roof.” At first she wondered if it was burglary in progress. “I thought maybe someone was hacking into the lock,” she shared, referring to her garage door.
Dadeville residents took to social media, trying to guess what the strange sound could be. Many residents assumed that the clamor was the result of a sonic boom from military planes breaking the sound barrier. They likened it to an incident in 2024, when the source of a booming noise in southern Perth was determined to be the Singapore Air Force. Jonti Horner dismissed any extraterrestrial origins for the boom, stating he was confident it was not related to such phenomena.
Ongoing Investigation
The unexplained explosion that rattled DC and much of Northern Virginia remains under investigation, and officials are still working to identify what caused the unknown boom. In truth, police have been rather coy as to the source of the noise. “From a policing point of view, we don’t know what the noise was,” said officer Dave Rowe.
The unfolding incident has had many residents in Mildura scratching their heads and worrying as well. As speculation mounts around possible explanations, experts are wary of making assumptions until more evidence is provided.
